Avoid one number for every purpose
Kiln dried and air dried describe processing or supply conditions; neither phrase alone establishes the current moisture content of every board. Identify the condition offered by the supplier and the exposure expected in the application. Wood responds to surrounding moisture conditions, so dimensional planning needs a clear basis. Structural moisture assumptions belong to the design review and should not be copied into a receiving acceptance rule. Ask the responsible parties to establish the delivery and installation requirements appropriate to the specified product and project.
Specify a recordable check
A moisture log should identify the instrument, settings or corrections used, measurement locations, date, product lot and person taking readings. Record the project-defined sampling approach instead of suggesting that a single reading represents a whole shipment. If the instructions require a particular preparation or measurement method, reference its document and revision. Results without the method are difficult to compare later. A blank target is an open question; the tool must not manufacture a default moisture limit and present it as technically justified.
Give exceptions a destination
Name the person who reviews results outside the project requirement, and define what information they need. Keep affected material identifiable while the question is resolved. If storage conditions change or a shipment is split across locations, record that change with the readings. Acclimation should be documented according to the applicable instructions and project requirements rather than reduced to a universal waiting period. Close the issue with the decision, date and authority recorded. A checklist can establish that readings and instructions are attached, while suitability remains a decision for the assigned reviewer.
